Why lacquer, why now?
Ishikawa prefecture is renowned, in much the same vein as Kyoto, for its traditional Japanese arts and crafts, including lacquerware and ceramics.
Those traditional arts and crafts, especially tableware, are an integral part of people's daily lives.
Above all, lacquerware has been handed down from generation to generation till today in the three areas of Wajima, Yamanaka and Kanazawa.
However, it is necessary to break away from the fixed ideas of the past and to design new products in keeping with today's lifestyle.
Today humanity faces such major and pressing issues as how to sustain the world environment and how to preserve traditional regional cultures and techniques. Japanese urushi is a natural lacquer, many careful, hand painted coats of which are required to reveal its finest nature, but with which delicate and durable lacquerware can be created. Even now the true value of natural lacquerware is only just being gradually recognized.
The first Ishikawa International Urushi Design Competition started in 1989 as a biennial exhibition aiming to reveal anew the value of lacquer and the many ways it can be used in our daily lives.
In 1993 the International Design Fair was convened with the help of the Small and Medium Enterprise Agency. Since 1996 the Ishikawa International Urushi Design Exhibition has been held as a triennial exhibition.
This is the 6th event, and we have changed the name of the event as THE ISHIKAWA INTERNATIONAL URUSHI EXHIBITION 2002 to make our purpose more explicit. We aim to pursue new proposals and possibilities of urushi free from conventional frameworks of arts and crafts, lifestyle, the image of urushi as part of Asian cultures.
Through this exhibition, we would like to again explore the directions being taken in the world of urushi, and to provide a stimulus to regional industries and international exchanges, as well as to further the public's understanding of urushi.

| 1. |
Works must be lacquered (no requirement is made regards lacquering material). |
| 2. |
Any type of work may be submitted (tableware, furniture, interior goods, sculpture, etc.), but works must be of a solid form (drawings will not be accepted). Works which have been previously exhibited or commercially released may be freely submitted. |
| 3. |
Size: Combined length, width and height not to exceed 2.1 m.
Weight: Not to exceed 50 kg
(Works exceeding these conditions will not be judged) |

Each applicant (individual or group) may submit only one work or set of works. |

Deadline: May 10 (Friday), 2002
| 1. |
A completed application form must be received with two color slides (35mm, mounted) by the Executive Committee on or before May 10 (Friday), 2002. |
| 2. |
If clear size information is not provided and we are not able to determine whether the work meets the size conditions, the work will not be judged. Be careful of the size units when filling out the application form. |
| 3. |
The two slides should show the work from different angles.< |
| 4. |
The slides will also be used for the exhibition catalogue. Please number the slides 1 and 2, and mark their "front", "back", "top" and "bottom". |
| 5. |
Slide 1 will be used for the exhibition catalogue. |
| 6. |
Extreme care will be taken with the slides. However, if a slide is printed the wrong way due to it being improperly marked, the Executive Committee cannot accept responsibility. |
| 7. |
The provided sticky labels should be filled in and affixed to the slides. |
| 8. |
Slides will not be returned to applicants. |

| Preliminary Assessment |
 |
 |
In the middle of June, 2002, the judges appointed by the Executive Committee will conduct an assessment of the submitted works based on the slides provided. |
 |
| Notification of Results |
 |
 |
| 1. |
Applicants will be notified of the results of the preliminary assessment by mail approximately 2 weeks after the assessment is completed. |
| 2. |
Works passing the preliminary assessment will be displayed at the exhibition and will join the works of the invitees as candidates for the final assessment. |

| Exhibition Approval |
 |
 |
| 1. |
Successful applicants will be sent the result, a final entry pack, and an exhibition approval form. |
| 2. |
Those who wish to continue their submission must return the exhibition approval form to our office by the date given in the final entry pack. |

 |
Registration Fee |
 |
 |
| 1. |
A '20,000 registration fee is required for successful applications from within Japan. Methods of payment will be specified in the final entry pack. |
| 2. |
No registration fee is required for works submitted from overseas. |
|
 |
| Shipment of Works |
 |
 |
| 1. |
After returning the exhibition approval form, the artist should arrange for the actual work to be shipped to the location designated in the final entry pack by the indicated date. |
| 2. |
Shipping expenses are to be covered by the applicant.
| | 3. |
The Executive Committee can accept no responsibility for damage to works incurred during shipping. Please insure your work against shipping damage as you deem fit. |
| 4. |
Works will be unpacked and checked the day before the final assessment. If a work is found to be damaged upon unpacking, the Executive Committee will notify the artist. Disposition of damaged works will be left to the applicant's discretion.

The Executive Committee cannot be held responsible for a submitted work not being exhibited or accepted for final assessment due to shipping damage. |
| 6. |
If the actual piece submitted is different to that shown in the slides, it will be neither judged nor exhibited. |
| 7. |
In the final assessment and exhibition, works will be arranged for display as shown in the submitted slides. Any special assembly/arrangement instructions, sketches or notes should be included as necessary with both the exhibition approval form and the work itself. |
| 8. |
Extreme care will be taken in the process of transport, assembly, display and general handling of submitted works by the Executive Committee and its representatives. However, the Executive Committee can accept no responsibility for damage incurred in the process of setting up a complicated work, etc. |

Conditions 9~16 apply to overseas submissions: |
| 9. |
Customs clearance for overseas submissions shall usually be obtained on the basis that the work is to be returned (re-exported) after the exhibition. |
| 10. |
When shipping a submission from overseas, bear in mind that it will take about one week to clear customs. |
| 11. |
Works priced at more than '10,000 (CIF = total cost, including insurance and freight) should not be sent by normal mail or international express courier as they may not be able to obtain customs clearance on a re-export basis. Even if the work clears customs, customs duties may be charged upon its return. In such a case, customs duties shall be paid by the applicant. |
| 12. |
All Japanese customs and internal transport fees will be paid by the Executive Committee. |
| 13. |
In order to facilitate customs clearance, it is important that the shipping invoice contains all necessary facts and the work is priced the same as the value indicated on the original application form. |
| 14. |
The Executive Committee cannot be held responsible for a submitted work not being exhibited or accepted for the final assessment due to failure to clear customs because of an improperly completed shipping invoice. |
| 15. |
Overseas submissions which are directly delivered by the artist, or their appointed representatives, will be treated the same as works by Japanese residents. In this case all Japanese customs duties and in-Japan transport fees are to be paid by the applicant. |
| 16. |
Even in the case of a work being shipped through an agent, communication will still be directly between the Executive Committee and the applicant. |

| Final Judging |
 |
 |
Submitted works will be assessed toward the end of August, 2002.
The final assessment panel will decide the prize winning entries. Entries not winning a prize will be listed as "selected works", but such works will receive no official certification. |

| Special Roundtable Discussion |
 |
 |
The day after the final assessment (at the end of August, 2002), a roundtable discussion will be convened. The comments on the final assessment by the judges will be reported and their opinions will be exchanged.
The date and venue in detail will be informed to all the applicants from within Japan. |

| Final Results |
 |
 |
| 1. |
All entrants to the final assessment will receive written notification of the results by mail, approximately two weeks after the final assessment. |
| 2. |
The mass media of Ishikawa Prefecture will be informed of the final results as soon as they are finalized. |
| 3. |
All major Japanese arts & crafts and design related organizations and publications will receive notice of both the results and the following exhibition. |

"The Ishikawa International Urushi Exhibition 2002"
Date: In the middle of November 2002(About 5 days)
Place: Kanazawa, Ishikawa(exact location yet to be finalized).
One of the Executive Committee Members of the Ishikawa International Urushi Exhibition may hold an exhibition in their place other than Kanazawa (in Kaga City in 1999). We will inform all entrants of this extra exhibition. Whether or not to display submitted works will depend on the entrant's preferance and convenience.

| 1. |
Photographs of all works passing the preliminary slide assessment will appear in the catalogue. |
| 2. |
Photographs of works passing the preliminary slide assessment will not appear in the catalogue if they are not submitted to the final assessment. |
| 3. |
All entrants to the final assessment will receive a free copy of the catalogue. |

| Sale of Works |
 |
 |
| 1. |
Works that are exhibited with a list price are for sale. |
| 2. |
Works for which a buyer appears during the exhibition will be sold at the completion of exhibition. Actual details of the sale will be entrusted to a professional agent. |
| 3. |
For works submitted from within Japan, be aware that the final sale price may be as much as twice the amount requested by the artist. |

| Care of Works |
 |
 |
| 1. |
While it is anticipated that the utmost care will be taken with submitted works, they will still be insured by the Executive Committee against handling damage incurred in the process of unpacking and display, etc. This coverage applies from receipt to return, but will not be applicable in the event of a natural disaster. |
| 2. |
The intellectual property rights to submitted designs reside entirely with the artist. |
| 3. |
Our policies regarding the use of designs is as follows: |

The Executive Committee and related public organizations are to be allowed free use of submitted designs for advertising and exhibition purposes. |
|
• |
This shall include use of the submitted slides in the exhibition catalogue, and posters and postcards publicizing the exhibition. |
|
• |
No time limit is placed on use of the slides. |
|
• |
Requests for the use of photographs of works for other purposes will be directed to the artist. |
|
• |
Transfer of intellectual property rights, or permission to use such, concomitant to the sale of a work shall be decided between the purchaser and the artist. |
|
• |
Selected works may be re-photographed at the discretion of the Executive Committee. |
| 4. |
Sketching and photographing of works at the exhibition will be prohibited. |
|
 |
| Return of Works |
 |
 |
| 1. |
Excepting those which have been sold, all works will be entrusted to a shipping company chosen by the Executive Committee for return to the submitting artist. |
| 2. |
Packing of works for shipping will be entrusted to specialists in the packing of art. If there is an accident during shipping, please contact the shipping company. Condition 3 applies only to Japanese resident submissions: |

Shipping and insurance fees for works submitted from within Japan should be paid by the artist upon delivery. Packing costs will be paid by the Executive Committee. |
Conditions 4~8 apply only to overseas submissions.

Shipping expenses for works submitted from overseas will be paid by the Executive Committee to an international airport in the artistŐs country of residence. Shipping expenses from the airport onward and any customs duties liable on return shall be paid by the artist. |
| 5. |
Shipping and insurance fees for works submitted from overseas that are to be sent on to an address within Japan shall be paid by the recipient. The Executive Committee may request repayment by the recipient of any customs duties and Japanese shipping fees already paid. |
| 6. |
In as much as inability or refusal to pay shipping expenses from the airport onward and any customs duties liable on return causes a work to be unreturnable, the work may be destroyed forthwith. |
| 7. |
Shipping and insurance fees for works submitted from overseas that are to be sent on to an address within Japan shall be paid by the recipient. the Executive Committee will request repayment by the recipient of any customs duties and Japanese shipping fees already paid. |
| 8. |
Refusal to pay return shipping charges for any unsold work shall be cause for the Executive Committee to dispose of the work as it sees fit, which fact should be kept in mind when agreeing to submit your work for exhibition. |
| 9. |
Submitted works shall be returned approximately 3 months after the exhibition. However, in case an extra exhibition is held in a venue other than Kanazawa and submitted works are displayed, they shall be returned approximately 3 months after the extra exhibition. |

| Other Matters |
 |
 |
Any matters not detailed herein shall be summarily handled as deemed appropriate by the Executive Committee. |
